Michelle Calkins was a member of the 1971 Calgary Aquabelles Team that won the Junior National Team title. The following year, the team repeated its win and Michelle also won the solo event. In 1973 with the Senior Aquabelle Team, she earned a silver medal at the World Aquatic Championships. She won gold medals in the team competition at the Nationals in 1975, 1976, and 1977. Michelle Calkins won silver medals at the 1975 Pan American Games; and, at the Pan Pacific Games she won gold along with her duet partner Helen Vanderburg. In 1977, she won the Aggregate at the Canadian Nationals and was named joint winner of Canada's Junior Athlete of the Year with Helen. Michelle Calkins won a gold medal at the 1978 National Duet Competition and followed with the World Aquatic Championship.
