How to use our search

Search:
- This is a great place to search for broad or general search terms. ie: hockey gloves

Object Type:
- If you are looking for a more specific search, this is where you should start. Items are sorted into keyword headers, making like objects easier to browse.
- Examples include Equipment, Headwear, Clothing, Document, Photograph, Jersey.
- Note that specific object such as Hockey Stick would be searched under Equipment or you may find better results using the general SEARCH area.

Sport:
- Use this area to search by sport. This is a great way to browse and really get a broad scope of a sport within the Collection. Ie: Badminton

Period:
- Using the sliders, it’s easy to narrow your field of search to within a decade. Collection items area given a period based on decades. If you are searching for an EXACT year (ie:1994) it would be best to type 1994 into the general SEARCH area and use the sliders.

If you have trouble with the search, or have a very specific search query that you cannot find in our Online Collections Archive, please feel free to contact Breanna at or 403-341-8614.

Collections Expansion 2017

Our collection is the foundation of the museum as we strive to protect and share Alberta's sports history. The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum houses over 11,500 artefacts in its collection and continues to add new acquisitions through donations. Artefacts include clothing, equipment, trophies, medals, programs, and much more.

We are excited to get started on a long-awaited expansion of our collections facility. Throughout 2017, we will be completing a comprehensive inventory of our collection, packing it up for storage off site, and clearing out the collections room. We are having a new mezzanine floor installed in the room with new compact rolling shelving installed underneath. When it is all said and done, we should gain almost an additional 50% storage space.

None of this would be possible without the financial support from Canadian Economic Diversification Fund through the federal government and the Community Facility Enhancement Program through the provincial government. We greatly appreciate all the financial contributions individuals have made to the project over the past year.

Donation of Artefacts

We would like to thank all of our past artefact donors over the years, we would not have the extensive collection we have today without your thoughtful generosity.

We will NOT BE ACCEPTING ANY NEW DONATIONS THROUGH 2017, while our collections facility undergoes a major renovation.

If you have items you would like to donate to the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame & Museum please hold onto them until we have finished the renovations. This will allow us to ensure the safety and preservation of all the objects in our care.

For more information on the Collections Expansion Renovations please check out the Collections Expansion page where we will be posting updates and photos as the work progresses.

Expansion Highlights

Just A Dream

"The desire to expand our current collection space goes back quite a few years, back to before I was even in my current position. I recall the first meeting back in 2012 between Donna, Foothills Systems, and myself when we stood in the space and imagined what we could turn it into. With limited floor space but a high ceiling, the most obvious solution was to go up. We had Foothills draw up a draft of what the space could look like with a mezzanine floor and new compact rolling shelving underneath.

I fell in love with the new design and the idea that we could increase our storage space to that extent. But the price tag on the project was going to be the largest hurdle to overcome. We started looking into different funding sources and writing grants until we were successful in securing half of the funding. From there we decided to move ahead with the project and work of finding the rest of the money as we went.

I am so excited that this summer we will finally be able to see this dream of new larger collections space come into existence. This will allow us to continue to collect and preserve Alberta's rich sporting heritage."

Press Conference Announcement: July 28, 2015
"Amazing announcements today regarding federal funding for local infrastructure improvement projects. Canada's C150 Community Infrastructure Program awarded nearly $340,000 to improvements to Westerner Park, the Innisfail Legion, the Delburne Community Hall, and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum will be using it's portion of the grant to expand it's Collections space in order to safely house the 12,000+ artefacts in it's Collection. Project date is expected to take place in 2017, so keep your eyes peeled for upcoming announcements regarding this project!"

Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum Receives CFEP Funding for Renovations and Improvements to the Collections Room

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum will continue to grow and enhance their collection of artifacts with the support and funding from the Alberta Community Facility Enhancement Program.

Kim Shreiner, MLA Red Deer North, presented Donna Hateley, Managing Director of the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, with a cheque to assist with the renovation costs and improvements to the collections room which stores all the historical sports equipment, trophies, photographs, and much more.

"We are out of space and there is so much more sports history that we would like to be able to preserve for years to come. With the CFEP funding, we will be able to add an open mezzanine floor to accommodate future growth of our collections. We will also be able to incorporate tours of the collection area into our Beyond the Classroom Education."

The renovations to the collections room will begin in the new year and will be a huge undertaking. Over 14,000 items will be catalogued, carefully wrapped and properly packed, then stored off-site during these renovations. A project this big would not be possible without the ability to apply for funding through different sources, including the Alberta Community Facility Enhancement Program.
