Track & Field Introduction
Track and Field groups approximately 30 different events which were formerly divided into Track or Field. Track included events such as sprints, middle, and long distance races. Field events included throwing and jumping events. Modern track and field began around the 17th century in England. By the 19th century, these events were becoming recognized as professional meets. The first modern Olympics in 1896 consisted mainly of track and field events.
